Forward

For years now I have recognized the fact that my nephew’s enormous knowledge about American soccer needed to be documented. When he asked me to write the forward to his book I breathed a sigh of relief. At last he was getting something down in writing after years of badgering by me and other family members. The growth of the game in the USA, since I coached there in the 1960’s, has been impressive. Continued growth will require sophisticated coaching. The teaching chapters in this book focus on sessions and exercises which address the issues specific to American players. It is a book for coaches at every level but, especially, coaches of players aged u’9 – u’14. This is a vitally important age when players are, without even knowing it, making decisions on which sport they will choose to play. In addition, it is an age when distinctive athletic habits are formed. Jeff’s book addresses the needs of players from a unique sports culture – a culture very different than anywhere else in the world.
